A PAMP Suisse gold bar is a 999.9 fine bar made in Ticino, Switzerland, by MKS PAMP SA, a refiner that's been on the LBMA Good Delivery List since 1987. You'll most often see its Lady Fortuna minted bar, sold from 1 gram to 1 kilo in a sealed CertiPAMP assay card. The gold in one is worth its fine weight times today's spot price of today’s spot price per troy ounce.

The Ticino refiner behind PAMP Suisse bars

PAMP is short for Produits Artistiques Métaux Précieux, French for "artistic precious metals products." PAMP says it was established in 1977 and is based in Ticino, where it runs its refinery, fabrication plant and mint.

The company behind the brand is MKS PAMP SA. PAMP tells the story this way: Mahmoud Kassem Shakarchi founded the trading house MKS in Geneva in 1979 and bought a majority stake in PAMP in 1981. In November 2021, PAMP SA merged with MKS (Switzerland) SA to form MKS PAMP SA. The PAMP brand, its hallmark and its bars stayed the same, PAMP says, and the business is family run, now in its third generation.

Is PAMP on the LBMA Good Delivery List?

It is. The LBMA's current gold list shows MKS PAMP SA, at Castel San Pietro, Ticino, first listed on June 10, 1987. A related company, MMTC-PAMP India Pvt Ltd in Haryana, India, has been on the same list since 2014.

PAMP also says MKS PAMP is one of only three refineries worldwide that both the LBMA and the London Platinum and Palladium Market have named as a Referee. That role includes testing samples and supplying reference samples for the Good Delivery system.

Lady Fortuna, the goddess on PAMP bars

It's the image on the back of PAMP's classic minted bars. PAMP introduced it in 1979 and says it was the first precious metals brand to decorate the back of its minted bars at all.

The figure is Fortuna, the Roman goddess of fortune and prosperity, shown with the symbols PAMP lists for her: sheaves of wheat, poppies, a horn of plenty, precious coins and a wheel of fortune. PAMP strikes the bars with a polished and frosted surface it calls a proof-like finish. It makes other minted designs too, such as Good Luck Cranes, Maneki Neko and Lady Freedom, but Lady Fortuna is the core range.

The sizes PAMP makes

PAMP lists every Lady Fortuna gold minted bar at 999.9 fine. We've shown dimensions where PAMP publishes them, and converted the troy ounces at the NIST figure of 31.1034768 grams per troy ounce.

There are also 2, 3 and 5 tola minted bars, and a Multigram+25 bar, which Costco sells as a 25 gram multigram bar. The tola figure is approximate. Valcambi, another Swiss refiner, lists 116.51 grams of fine gold in its 999.0 fine 10 tola bar, which puts a tola at about 11.66 grams; the troy ounce guide has more on these units.

PAMP cast bars

PAMP pours cast bars as well, sized, it says, to suit regional markets. The gold cast range takes in 50 gram, 100 gram, 250 gram, 500 gram and 1 kilo bars, a 10 tola bar, a 1 tael bar and a 400 oz bar. PAMP lists the 100 gram cast bar at 27 x 44 mm and 5 mm thick, and the 400 oz bar at 84.5 x 245 mm and 40 mm thick, both 999.9 fine. Our gold bars guide explains how cast and minted bars differ.

The sealed CertiPAMP card

CertiPAMP is the sealed assay card every PAMP minted bar comes in, a format PAMP says it first developed in the 1990s. It holds the bar, and it's also the bar's official assay certificate, stating the fine gold content and weight.

According to PAMP, each card carries:

  • the bar's own serial number, matching the one stamped on the bar
  • a QR code used by the VERISCAN app
  • the signature of an independent Swiss Federal Assayer
  • a thin removable film over the card face

Behind the card, PAMP says, are assay laboratories supervised by independent assayers sworn and accredited by the Swiss Federal Bureau for the Control of Precious Metals. Each bar is individually checked and registered before it's sealed.

Checking a bar with VERISCAN

Every bar has a microscopic surface pattern as individual as a fingerprint. That's the idea VERISCAN, PAMP's authentication system, is built on. PAMP records the pattern at production, and its app compares a fresh scan against that record. It launched in 2015, and scans are free.

As PAMP describes it, you:

  1. Download the free VERISCAN app from Apple's App Store. PAMP lists iPhone 7 or newer running iOS 12 or later.
  2. Sign in and open Automatic Scan.
  3. Scan the QR code on the CertiPAMP card or certificate from inside the app. PAMP says not to scan it with the iPhone camera first.
  4. Say whether the bar is still in its card or loose, and pick the side to scan.
  5. Hold the phone flat over the bar, lined up with the on-screen guide.
  6. Read the result: Pass, or No Result Available.

Only products with the VERISCAN logo on their CertiPAMP card, or on the paper certificate that comes with a cast bar, can be checked this way, so look for the logo first. PAMP says the bar can be scanned inside or outside its card and is left intact, and larger products can be checked on all six sides. For other ways to test a bar, see how to spot fake gold.

How much is a PAMP Suisse gold bar worth?

Its fine weight times the spot price. Take the 1 oz Lady Fortuna bar: at 999.9 fine it holds 0.9999 troy ounces of gold, so at today’s spot price per troy ounce its metal value is a whisker under one ounce of spot. A 100 gram bar holds about 3.215 troy ounces, and a 1 kilo bar about 32.15.

A dealer charges a premium over that, and each dealer sets its own price when you sell. The gold value calculator gives the metal value of any size, and the premium calculator shows how far a quote sits above it. We'd leave the bar in its sealed card. The card is its certificate.
